SOIL AND CROP NUTRITION BENEFITS

SODIUM

Whilst Sodium is not an essential element for higher plants (it is only essential for certain algae), some crops respond well to increases in soil Sodium levels. Responses will vary according to the availability of Potassium in the soil. Where Potash indices are adequate, only the root crops, and particularly sugar beet, fodder beet and turnips will show yield response. However, where Potash indices are low or deficient, cereals and some brassicae will show yield responses.

Sodium will assist in improving drought resistance in plants, will reduce wilting, and may increase leaf expansion. There is also some anecdotal evidence to suggest that the addition of sodium can improve the palatability of poor grassland and reduce the effects of selective grazing.

No crops display readily recognisable deficiency symptoms.
